In cases where drawings of the part to be tooled are not available, we can start from a sample of the part. By scanning the sample either with touch probe or optical systems, we obtain the input to a reverse engineering program, which then generates the 3 D math model of the part. Hidden features can be scanned by computer tomography (CT), but if the required accuracy of the hidden surfaces is beyond the CT capability, careful sectioning of the sample may be the only way.

From the resulting 3 D math model, counter samples are prepared and inspected. These counter samples and inspection reports are then sent via express service to the customer for confirmation, including fit tests to mating parts. Counter sample approval also means approval of the original sample CAD files. We are now ready to start designing the mold.
